A nation that always risies

As a nation, so much have we endured Yet we are always resilient and reassured Wars, tsunami’s pandemics and more We stood through it all with hope at our core Now as nature descends with unforgiving force And its fury takes its ruthless course We rise once again in shared solidarity Our hearts teeming with unrelenting clarity No matter the differences in our beliefs We’re there for each other, providing relief It shows how truly selfless we can all be It’s truly inspiring for all who see Through trials and tribulations, we are united  In hope unyielding, we are never divided Our spirits shine though our darkest hours And we will see humanity’s true healing power We will rebuild and we will not falter Our shared path forward we will not alter Because no matter the punishment or crisis  We are Sri Lanka, a nation that rises

Heroes

Heroes, we all have them in our lives They give us hope, they help us thrive And no, I don’t mean the ones with capes Just regular humans in all sizes and shapes   No powers, masks or need for fame But they change the world, all the same They live to give us strength and hope They show us love and help us cope   Some wield scalpels, steady and precise Some teach us truth, and give us a voice Some guard our freedom and enforce laws Giving everything for us, no matter the cause   Some our family, showing us the way Parents, siblings, friends, there every day They hold our hands, and keep us warm And guide us through the worst of storms   They fight battles that we often do not see And they give their lives so selflessly They give us all the freedom and choice Yet we take for granted, what they sacrifice   Heroes are everywhere, even if we don’t see They’re normal people, like you and me Whether they fight, heal, protect or teach They leave a mark, that we can neve...

The Weight of Hate

Hate has been with us for as long as time Woven through history, like rhythm and rhyme From podiums down to corners of our streets Under the guise of pride, it does not retreat   With religion, race, even skin colour at its core We live divided, hate turns strangers to foes So many fight over borders, gods and flags, And so many innocents end up with toe tags   Politics divides us as much as other beliefs And corruption reigns, while people grieve Some don’t vote, because our ‘leaders’ lie Believing false promises, while children cry   Even gender has become a battlefield And ‘equality’ is a fight where nobody yields Orientation and identity are a whole other mess Where it will all end, is anyone’s guess   Class still divides the very streets we walk From the meals we eat, to the way we talk No matter where we live, or what our background Ultimately, we end up beneath the same ground   Race and culture, so often misunderstood What is wrong to some, to others is ...

Our Country, Where Art Thou?

Oh Sri Lanka, what have you become? But a slave to corrupt, power hungry scum, A country once known for her welcoming smile, That nobody has seen in a really long while. Sadly, it was your people who let you down, Their thievery and greed stole your crown, They pillaged, plundered, and set you back, And it will take a miracle to get you on track. But once a glimmer of hope was ignited, Under one banner, the people stood united, They fought side by side for one great cause, To free you from the grip of those slimy claws. But “political' agendas quickly extinguished that flame, And once again they hang their heads in shame, Your legacy, your heritage and history were buried, By the very people your heart once carried. You’ve dealt with colonisers, wars even pandemics, Now you barely have fuel or food, it’s pathetic, You’ve even bowled over the world in the sports arena, How to restore that glory? The "leaders" have no idea. Your forefathers would be very disappointed, Seein...

As you are

Ask yourself, "is this who I'm supposed to be?" "Is this all this world has to offer me?" "Must I be surrounded by all this negativity?" "What do I have to do to find serendipity?" Think of what you've been forced to survive  And be thankful for everyday you're alive  Be grateful for the real people, family and friends And for the loyalty that never ever bends Forget about those who have been hurtful  And all the people who only saw you as useful  Because they aren't worth the time or the effort  And you're better off without all the hurt  Always face forward, don't dwell on the past Cherish the memories, even if they are vast Don't pull the punches, fight on and fight hard  And don't let anyone make you drop your guard This is exactly who you're supposed to be  Even if some are just too ignorant to see  Strive to be the vessel of your own changes And you will overcome life's many challenges  Don't sto...

Ego

They think they're better than the rest smarter, more mature, and stronger too  but in reality when they're put to the test they are the easiest people to see through They live in a bubble, a blissful ignorance in their minds, they can make no mistakes and there's no limit to their arrogance they'll get their way, no matter what it takes They always put themselves first  and be the first to call another person weak their way of quenching that hurtful thirst is by placing themselves on that peak There's no reasoning with them, not at all in their eyes, everyone else is beneath them they'll do anything to make others feel small like demean, humiliate, hurt and condemn  If only they could see the error in their hearts and understand the severity of what they inflict but they don't, even if they tear someone apart only their opinion matters, even if others contradict They're so blinded by their egos and selfish ways they think they're invincible and ...

Step back

Taking a step back can open our eyes  To a greater world of truth and lies  It gives us time to observe and reminisce And provides perspective we'd sometimes miss  From situations and people we already know  Things become clearer than they were before Our opinions and feelings can instantly change Even those we love, can seem distant and strange Re-evaluation is sometimes a step we need to take  Of friendships, work and other choices we make When we step back, we see all the irregularity  And more enough reason to make ourselves a priority  Some will understand and some will ignore But it's a fact of life that people come and go Reflection shows reasons why some get to stay  And opens our eyes to why we should pull away So start with yourself, it's the only way forward  Sort out your problems before you move onward  Disregard the blood, sweat and tears you spill  Cos if you don't invest in yourself, nobody else will

Detox

Sometimes we all need to take a break When the stress of life is too much to take A few days, a week, however long you need Take all time necessary, don't let anyone impede  Too much of anything can be detrimental  It takes a big toll, both physical and mental  It's okay to take a break, recharge, and unwind  We all need to destress and clear our minds  Mentally and physically, we absorb so much  From work to friendships, family, and such  We carry as much as we can possibly muster  And when it's too much, it becomes a cluster  Our schedules make it hard to deal with it all  And we bottle it up no matter how big or small  But the sooner we take a little time for ourselves  The sooner we can take it all off the shelves  It takes time to heal and unravel the mess And reaching out will always help us progress But sometimes we have to be a little selfish And look out for ourselves when things are amiss    Life is fic...

Mental Health

We all battle demons in our minds  Anxiety and depression are so unkind We all go through dark times in our lives  And our support systems help us thrive  Whether it's friends, family, or even a Pro They are integral in helping us to grow in making sure we continue to fight  And helping us through the sleepless night   Overthinking is one of the worst parts  It can hurt so bad it'll tear you apart Getting lost in our own heads is bad too  It's like watching reruns of all we've been through  We go over it all more than we should  And all the bad stuff outweighs the good We all have our go-to coping mechanisms And we run to them for temporary escapism Some people endure, it makes them strong  Others reach out, and that's never wrong  A selfish few sometimes take advantage The kindness they offer can feel like a bandage  But they prey on our ability to think and cope  And give us all a false sense of hope  But there are ...

Music

You speak to me, in ways I never knew  It's amazing how you see right through  You're like a warm embrace on a cold night And you make every situation feel so right   You speak to my heart, so true and pure Pain is a disease and you are a cure You're able to define the emotions we feel You’re the only thing that's pure and real   Even without a voice, you speak a million words You bring people together from all over the world The power you hold is second to none And you're our friend when we have no one   You are heard everywhere and loved by all You've held my hand and caught me as I fall Whether I'm happy or sad, you'll always be there You don't even know me, but I know you care   Crossing cultural, racial, and ethnic divides You yourself are a language that provides No matter the message, everyone listens You speak to through every note written   You understand without so much as a question You truly are the world's greatest invention Without ...

Ghost

There you are, a distant memory  A ghost that continues to haunt me Just a reminder of the love I feel Another chapter in a story surreal I've trusted my heart, I have no regrets And You were as real as real could get All I wanted was to love you and be true  Because I always saw the real you  I saw the pain and the darkness within And the shadows you've tried to hide them in  I've seen the truth, I've seen your heart And I've known you right from the start  I understand why I wasn't right  And I know why you weren't willing to fight The fault is mine, and mine alone And that's why I, am still on my own I guess there just wasn't meant to be A future for the likes of you and me Not romantically, but maybe as friends  And yet if you need me, I'll be there till the end  Will I hold it against you? no I won't  Do I regret anything? No I don't  The heart wants what the heart wants  And it's my heart that you will always haunt  In th...

Cursed Hearts

Those with golden hearts Are cursed from the start  They feel more than others  And as such, they suffer  They love unconditionally  And make decisions irrationally  They cling to glimmers of hope  Cos it's the only way they cope  But they're often put to the test And they hurt more than the rest Cos they are driven by empathy  And are clouded by sympathy  Easily open and freely used  And quite often they are abused   Hearts that thrive on loyalty Honesty, love, and integrity They give too much too soon And they never end up immune To pain, to suffering, and grief It always seems like there's no relief No matter how good the intentions They don't even get an honorable mention It's almost a law that is unspoken That hearts of gold always end up broken

Toxicity

Who is good for us and who isn't? Who improves us and who doesn't? It's up to us to choose, though it is tough  Who we want by our sides, when life gets rough  Friendships are a dime a dozen, that's a fact  And everyone claims that they have your back As we get older, everything changes  Even best friends, can end up strangers  But it's up to us, it's our call to make Even if the decision is or ends up a mistake  And though looking out for ourselves is a must It is important to know who we can trust  Because we all fester about who will be there, And sometimes we're blind to people who really care  Communication is another essential  Because a lack of it, can be a defining differential  We can a do lot by just reaching out to each other  And resolve any issues we have with one another  If we accept our faults, we can progress more  As human beings we have to, in order to grow  It’s easy to blame others for our shortco...

Emotions

We’re all driven by our emotions By how we feel, in any situation We're built for both joy and pain Even if it drives us all insane It's the way of the world we live in Even if sometimes it feels like a prison That's human nature, how it's meant to be We feel everything we touch, hear and see Love, happiness, pain, and sadness Stress, frustration, anger, and madness Our emotions can break us or keep us intact Because they always determine how we react Our reactions are based on what we feel And sometimes it clouds fake from real Emotions also define how we see others And sometimes dictates how we treat one another They can unite and separate people And give us strength or make us feeble We're born with free will to make our own choices And we have a right to use our own voices But our voices aren't always strong Because sometimes they can steer us wrong So think about the feelings, each and every day Because in reality, our emotions can lead us astray

Who said?

Everyone has something to say About the things, we do every day Everyone’s entitled to use their voice Whether we listen or not, is our choice People always try to cut us down But it’s up to us to swim or drown Like actions, even words can hurt Where it comes from, defines its worth Sometimes unexpected stones are cast And it’s clear some things aren’t meant to last But how important are the voices we hear? How much does it hurt when the truth is clear? Don't listen to irrational and idle chatter Think about whose opinion really matters If it questions the foundations of loyalty and trust Then weighing the pros and cons is a must So before all of it gets in your head Just ask yourself, who said?

Loyalty

Sometimes we never know What's real and what's a show We take People at face value Without knowing what's true We trust without blinking And love without thinking We confess and we confide Thinking nothing can divide But sometimes we get hurt The ones we trust, slinging dirt And then their truth is revealed Their agenda's no longer concealed And the pain is almost numbing Because we never saw it coming And the ones we feel will never break Cause the most painful heartache But that's just how life works out Not all friendships go all out That may be a hard pill to swallow Betrayal can make anyone feel hollow Friendship is more than time spent It's not transactional, there's no rent It's more than drinks and companionship And it's more than just a relationship It's support through good and bad It's a hug when you're happy or sad It's unconditional love and respect Without ever knowing what to expect Above all...

Twenty-Twenty

What a chaotic year it’s been, Look at all that we have seen, The world stopped because of a virus, And we’re still letting hate divide us, Politicians still lying through their teeth, Ignoring all the funerals and wreaths, Corruption still rampant behind the scenes It’s still the same old song and dance routine, We all should address this common threat, And fight our way back from certain death, So many have been affected already, We’ve seen something this deadly, Yet some still think that they’re invincible, And contracting the virus is inconceivable, They live on in their ignorant bliss But the truth is, nobody is safe from this, They protest having to wear a mask, And it’s really such a simple ask, But people are ignorant and selfish, Only thinking of their lives, not anyone else’s, At least now can we set aside the hate? And unite so we all don’t suffer the same fate, We’re locked down and confined, With so much left undefined, Hopef...

Fight

Fight back, stand your ground Don’t let anyone push you around People pray on weakness every day Don’t let anyone put you in harm’s way Nobody has the right to put you at risk Don’t’ be blind, walk away straight and brisk Fight back; take control of your life Stop letting others put you in strife Live life on your terms, not anyone else’s Sometimes we all have to be a little selfish Whether friends, colleagues or whoever Nobody controls you, not now, not ever Your fate is your own, and that’s a fact A genuine few will always have your back How you choose to live is entirely your choice, Don't be afraid to stand up and use your voice Because it’s all entirely up to you alone Make your decisions all on your own Above all, by your heart do what’s right Don’t be afraid, just stand up and fight

Trust

On our family, loved ones and friends We only see the good in them all And hope they’ll catch us when we fall We blindly put our hearts in their hands Regardless of where they stand But sometimes that trust is misplaced And we end up in a really dark place Trust is hard to rebuild when it’s broken Especially when no words are spoken It leaves our hearts broken and tattered Making us feel like we never really mattered But that’s life and not everyone stays And we still open our hearts every day Because nobody wants to live life alone And even if it’ just a voice on the phone We need someone to talk to and to listen Because our own minds can feel like prison It's the people that stay that are an absolute godsend They truly care and will be there till the end But still, for all, it would be naive  To think that even they won't leave But it's not wrong to trust or open our hearts Because we never know what it may start? It could be ...
