Our Country, Where Art Thou?

Oh Sri Lanka, what have you become? But a slave to corrupt, power hungry scum, A country once known for her welcoming smile, That nobody has seen in a really long while. Sadly, it was your people who let you down, Their thievery and greed stole your crown, They pillaged, plundered, and set you back, And it will take a miracle to get you on track. But once a glimmer of hope was ignited, Under one banner, the people stood united, They fought side by side for one great cause, To free you from the grip of those slimy claws. But “political' agendas quickly extinguished that flame, And once again they hang their heads in shame, Your legacy, your heritage and history were buried, By the very people your heart once carried. You’ve dealt with colonisers, wars even pandemics, Now you barely have fuel or food, it’s pathetic, You’ve even bowled over the world in the sports arena, How to restore that glory? The "leaders" have no idea. Your forefathers would be very disappointed, Seein...

The Long Walk

Broken inside, haunted and alone Walking through life, all on his own  All his losses, his heart still mourns Tears in his eyes, cos of chances blown  With no real direction, he wanders on Walking through roses, but covered in thorns  Thinking of his purpose, why he was born And why it's always his heart that ends up torn  The road winds long with much in his way  His desolate heart wanders without much to say  Fighting for his sanity with each passing day  Hoping the next person he meets might actually stay His mind clouded, pondering what went wrong  Looking for reasons for him to remain strong  Pushing through hurdles on his journey long Growing tired and weary of the same old song Weak and broken, the predators begin to stalk Like a fish in the water through eyes of a hawk  All he wants in life is an ear to hear him talk Hopefully he will find it, and end his long walk

Come back to me

Come back to me sanity You've been gone too long I fall at your feet with no vanity Cos it was you who kept me strong Come back to me friendship Cos you truly completed me In a split second you abandoned ship You left me so cold and empty Come back to me conscience Give me solace in time of need You were my true  constant And on you,  my soul would feed Come back to me laughter Bring back my smile for the world to see You truly were my master Cos you brought everyone to me Come back to me freedom You raised me at my worst You gave me more than wisdom And it's you who I miss the most

Our Emancipation

Our very own devotion To life’s very notion Depends on our motivation For leisure and education We face many decisions Throughout our many missions For the future we envision We must act with precision With the right supervision Because failure is an explosion Of uncontrollable emotion That flows like the ocean Puts our souls in dissolution And while we feel that desolation In the depths of isolation We always look for resolution While feeling life’s confusion We crave for that infusion To fill our heart’s contusions And restore our damaged vision When we find our salvation We raise a glass in celebration And while we feel that elevation Remember the revelation For it’s that exhilaration That prevents obliteration And gives us emancipation

Days go by

One day you’ll realize that life is such You look around and see, things have changed so much Nothing is like what they used to be anymore And you start thinking, “was all of that a show?” As life passes by and you look at everyone in envy You can’t help but feel, “why couldn’t that be me?” The internal battle between heart and mind never ends Especially when you stand alone among all your friends Looking back at your life, it really hasn’t been so bad Lots of amazing memories, both happy and sad Now and again you’ve endured pain and heartache And spilled so many tears over all those costly mistakes Life wasn’t meant to be easy and all and that’s a fact There’s nobody on earth who can try and deny that In good times and in bad we will never forget The people we lost and the words we regret As we come to certain points and take certain bends We hope that desolate hearts can one day be happy again And find meaning in their lives that they j...

Dreamer

I dream of a world where we all get along, A world where people know right from wrong Where there is unity without hate, And humanity would change the world’s fate I dream of a world that accepts those for all they are Where lifestyles don’t matter and love ruled by far A world where religion didn’t divide people at all And where the good in people prevailed and evil would fall I dream of a world where there was only one race Where people get along despite the colour of their face A world without selfish people and prejudice failed And people respected each other and nobody bailed I dream of a world where women aren’t objectified Where our mothers, sisters and daughters are glorified A world where people stood up against abuse and rape And where justice prevails and evildoers see no escape I dream of a world where human and animal lived as one Where profit was based on hard work and not stolen by a g...

Our Gem of an Island

What the hell is this country coming to? why are we turning a blind eye to the atrocities that keep happening? children are being abused and killed, women are being raped, murders all over the place, blatant disregard for human life on roads? is it just me or has Sri Lanka  'evolved' so much that human beings, have become unbelievably stupid? Let's begin with the number of road accidents that have been happening over the last month or so, all because of stupid drivers with no patience, because everyone has to be in such a damn hurry, that they don't realise other lives are in danger. The worst of the accidents thus far, involved two buses and a defender. Whoever was driving the defender, was on the wrong side of a singular white line and was speeding toward a blind bend. And for what? what was the point of that? so many died, so many were injured, and it all could've been prevented. Staying on the topic of road accidents and road rage, there have been several incide...

The Ugly Truth

Take a good look at the world today, At this once beautifully mysterious place Does everyone have to continue living in fear? Is this truly what any 'God' in any religion wanted for the world? We live in a world full of hate, pain and evil Honestly, how can people be so ignorant? Intolerance is a horrible thing, Why can't the people get along and live together? How can we as humans spread so much hate? Why are we afraid of people who are different? There are people suffering and  dying for nothing all over the world The rich live and the poor struggle to survive The extremists kill and terrorize in the name of 'God', The innocent who pray and worship the same 'God' suffer and die How ignorant can people be? just because others are different And because others have different beliefs and choose the way they live Innocent lives lost, and nobody does anything about it, That's the sad truth, all these questions go unanswered Doesn't anyone our so called l...

The Pretender

smiling, living through darkness and pain finding solace in all the scars and sutures peering through a window at the falling rain and tearing at the very thought of a lonely future dreaming of solitude on the islands hallow shores observing in envy at the happiness in the world the pretender lives, broken and alone with all his woes even in crowds, in his heart the blood incessantly curled but as he moves on through life, the face he wears is strong a tortured soul, once so full of life, just simply fades never intending to do anyone any wrong nursing scars left from serrated edged blades knowing no fear of man, only fears of responsibility moving through life, drowning in memories of yesterday knowing there are others who suffer from life's perpetual complexity from failed attempts to drown sorrows, dull hangovers everyday hoping that one day an end will come to this ill-gotten charade through poetry, comedy, mindless benders and games reminiscing, memories in a mind so brutally ...

Childhood

Running around the garden, playing all kinds of games thinking back now, life will never be the same sitting here reminiscing and writing all these rhymes lord knows I'll never forget, those amazingly innocent times Cricket, touch rugby or running around with toy guns such happy memories, so much crazy fun running freely up down the road together with my cousins and friends,  memories last forever Playing with figurines and toy cars alike pretending to be characters from TV that we like no stress in our lives in those care free days I miss those years in so many ways Now we're all grown up, some with kids of their own our own parents look at us and say ' goodness how they've grown' watching the next generation, run around like we did takes me back to those days when no worry was ever needed The best days of someones lives are always their childhood full of freedom and fun and the meaning of brotherhood even if it's playing a bass drum in school or wearing a cap ...

Scars

Once again he fights to go to sleep, wanting to make things right and earn his keep everyday he battles memories of his past he craves to be free of pain at long last Blood, sweat and tears, spilled like a soldier, with every hour that goes by, he feels the world get colder in his heart of hearts, he knows he's not the only one that suffers one would think all the scars would make him tougher How does one survive a life of broken dreams?, to clear a mind so beaten, internally he screams continuing down that long and lonely road, his shoulders weighed down by a heavy load Once again lying a wake in his bed, wondering if he can make true, the visions in his head, life is a fight, a battle and sometimes a war emotions so pure, so painful, so raw Battered and beaten, he keeps getting back to his feet, knowing he has to stand up, even in the face of defeat onward he plods and pushes through the demons both near and far and his memories will haunt him forever, lik...

The Lords of Rum

The Lords of Rum, a band of brothers four united by a bottle like none before no bar in the land was ever the same when these brothers four, started playing their games From Waters Edge to AM-PM, united did they stand, everywhere they went, they were like a traveling band from Sinatra to the Beatles, singing songs of old the memories of these nights, though blurry are gold It didn't really matter when or where they would convene, even if the venue was a serene latrine often joined by others, every weekend was epic it's a miracle that nobody ever needed a medic There is one who joined this brotherly convention, a lady of rum who deserves an honorable mention like them, her voice didn't come with volume control but because of that bottle, even she was always on a roll Four brothers and a sister, this clan should go down in history, how Rockland created that magic, is an absolute mystery though now they've disbanded, and gone their separate ways the...

Unjust War

Many years of meaningless violence we’ve seen Assassinations and bombings, an everyday scene Our people have spilled gallons of blood For what reason must we bury our brothers and sisters in mud Soldiers fall, while civilians crawl People being crushed underneath falling walls Now from above we see more danger From this terror, we inherited an unjust anger There was so much fighting now; we have forgotten why it started How can any human being be so ill hearted? Even children don’t see the light of another day They take one small step and they’re blown away We’ve been through it before, let’s stop this from happening again In so many years, there was no justice, just pain Let’s end this terror before even more people die Don’t say there is peace, because that’s a blatant lie Politicians are the cause of all this stupidity Spreading words of hate and immoral insecurity We look to our leaders for motivation and hope But they are the ones who push...
